Synopsis

Indigenous women’s resistance against the destruction of the Amazon rainforest is on the rise. Not just since the election of President Lula da Silva and the inception of the world’s first Indigenous Ministry, Brazil’s indigenous population is a force to be reckoned with. With their knowledge of the intricate networks of the natural world and their ancestral wisdom, they are the true Guardians of the Forest.

Amazônia (WT) is an intimate portrait of Juma Xipaia, a young woman leader of the Xipaia people from the state of Pará, Brazil. It is the story of her people’s existential fight against the destruction of their homeland, fuelled by international greed. Whilst fires are raging and illegal gold prospectors are ravaging their forest, Juma unites the indigenous people in fierce resistance. Having survived five attempts on her life, Juma is at the forefront of this fight. Defeat is not an option, so in order to win, she takes the fight to the global political arena.

This feature-documentary chronicles Juma’s life’s story from being a child of the forest to becoming its fierce defender.

The highly emotional and intimate film is intended for a global audience. In bringing Juma’s story to the world’s attention, we want to inspire our viewers to go out and fight for the protection of their only homeland, Mother Earth, for the sake of themselves, their children, and their children’s children.
